The term Renaissance means "new birth". Renaissance is a cultural movement. It began in Florence, Italy in the 14th and 17th century in the late Middle Ages and spread around Europe. Most people in northern Europe lived under Feudalism. People in the Renaissance had interest in art, literature, science, and religion. Artists studied art and copied art of ancient Greece and Rome. Renaissance scholars and artists developed a new focus on nature, ideals and achievements of human beings. This philosophy is called humanism. The Protestant Reformation is an effort to reform, or improve the Catholic Church. It was the establishment of new forms of Christianity. Many people disagreed with the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church like Martin Luther. He believed faith in God was the key to a proper Christian life.
